• SECRET RIVER

This system of caves, formed over centuries by an underground river, is located only a few miles from Playa del Carmen. It is by far the longest partially flooded cave in the Yucatan Peninsula, but what makes Río Secreto even more special is the fact that it is semi-sunken. Most caves found in the Yucatan are underwater. Río Secreto has more than 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) of semi-sunken cave mapped out with 15 natural outlets located in different areas. Rio Secreto is not only a hole in the ground and lowering yourself into the unknown, it's an breathtaking underground world untouched for thousands of years. This specific cave was discovered back in 2007 A journey through Río Secreto is surreal, mystical and memorable. A perfect place for an adventurer traveler.


ARCHEOLOGICAL SITES



• TULUM

In the ancient times, the Mayan developed a holy inner city that ascended high above the majestic cristal blue seaside of the Caribbean and was protected by 3 enormous walls and a steep cliff. This walled abode was given the honorary name of Tulum, the walled Mayan city. With over 60 restored temples, Tulum has hidden secrets that are spoken within the sacred walls with genuine paintings of the mysterious hieroglyphic writings. Only the high priests, mathematicians, astronomers, architects and engineers were allowed to dwell within the arms of this sacred city which is the only Mayan city built on the beach, while the commoners remained living beyond this holy city.


• CHICHEN ITZA

Chichen Itza is without doubt one of the most famous and best-preserved Mayan sites in the world. It is also one of the best-excavated and restored ancient cities. Tours are offered from most tourist cities in the Mexican Caribbean. One can only marvel at the amazing achievements of this great people. Civilization had developed a sophisticated writing system, mathematics, astronomy, calendars and architectural perfection. Bringing water and food for such a large population was no easy task. The Maya ruled the area for over three thousand years until they started to abandon their cities around 900 AD. Chichen Itza was a major center of political, spiritual, and military power. The city is believed to span around 100 square km (39 sq. miles). Tours are offered from almost anywhere. From Cancun, take the Freeway (180). On the freeway you can take the exit near Valladolid and check out this charming city at the heart of Yucatan. There is also a road parallel to the freeway. The road will lead you through small villages and is really beautiful because people in those towns continue using techniques of the time of the Mayas especially for cooking.
 

• COBA

Coba was a major center of the Mayan empire. The city is as mystical as it is beautiful. It is located deep in the jungle near a series of lakes where Spider Monkeys can be found. Parts of the city are still being excavated. and feel like an explorer who just discovered one of the greatest secrets of ancient times. Unquestionably the most impressive sight in Coba is the Nohoch Mul Pyramid. It rises 42m (138ft) and is thus the tallest of the pyramids on the Yucatan peninsula. You will have an amazing view from up there. Far above the treetops you will see many of the other structures of Coba and the surrounding lakes. The temple on top of the pyramid has the famous Bee God carving that can be found on most pyramids in the area. Honey was one of their most valued export goods.
 



DIVING

• COZUMEL

Cozumel is known in the scuba diving industry as one of the best scuba diving locations in the world. Cozumel is the Mexican Caribbean's largest island, just 12 miles off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. Located near Cancun; Cozumel is an island destination for scuba divers and non scuba divers alike. Although it is a divers mecca, even after decades as a popular. Most of the scuba diving and snorkeling activity on Cozumel is focused on the reefs and shallow coral formations that extend from the southern tip of the island to just south of San Miguel on the west coast. All of the Cozumel beaches are protected and extend from the ferry pier in downtown San Miguel to the southern tip of the island, many of which are protected as part of an underwater national park. Fishing is not allowed in this area. However, you can book a deep sea fishing excursion with many dive operators on the island.
 
• ISLA MUJERES

 In 1517, Isla Mujeres was discovered by the spanidars along with Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba who arrived to this abandoned site and discovered monuments in the form of women. They decided to give it the name of Isla Mujeres which means the island of women. The island was also used as a pirate refuge by famous men such as Jean and Peter Laffite, due to the fact that many spanish ships sailed very close to its shores. En ships such as the original cannons that lie among the natural coral reefs, caves and tropical fish. Now isla Mujeres is one of the most beautiful places in the word to dive is a peaceful island where you can spend a very good day scuba diving, snorkeling or just enjoying the beautiful beaches.
 


UNDERWATER MUSEUM
 
Submerge yourself in one of the most beautiful and clear waters of the world; The Mexican Caribbean. In the near future these crystal clear waters will be home to one of the largest underwater museums on the planet, located in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico. Forming this museum is a series of underwater sculptural installations all sited within the protected National Marine Park, of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Divers and snorkellers will have the opportunity to admire more than 400 original sculptures in depths ranging from 9 to 20 feet. The artist behind the project Jason deCaires Taylor offers a contemporary and cultural view of how the Mayan people have evolved throughout the years in “The Silent Evolution”. This monumental installation consists of more than 400 life size figurative sculptures. Also located in the museum, near the island of Isla Mujeres, a sculpture entitled “The Dream Collector” will be submerged, along with many other unique master pieces.
